TalkingHeads Wireless (THW)

TalkingHeads Wireless redesigns the radio at the top of a cell tower. Radios are where a mobile network's electricity goes, and THW's consume a third of what the nearest alternative does, which roughly halves the power draw of the network. Data traffic keeps climbing, 5G costs a fortune to run, and energy prices have surged.

The incumbents answer this with software, because they have enormous legacy radio portfolios spanning generations of hardware they don't want to re-engineer. Software helps at the margin. The energy is in the hardware, and only new hardware gets it back. Being unencumbered by 2G, 3G, and 4G is what makes the redesign possible: there's nothing to protect. Mobile networks are invisible infrastructure that runs constantly, everywhere, and their power draw grows with the traffic they carry, which is to say without limit.
