Rebound Technologies makes IcePoint, a cooling system that bolts onto the freezers at a cold storage facility and delivers bursts of high-capacity cooling on demand. Cold storage gets paid to freeze and hold product, so throughput is revenue, and the constraint is that facilities can't freeze fast enough: blast freezing needs far more capacity than steady-state storage, and legacy compression equipment can't flex.

So operators either size their equipment for the peak and run it far below capacity most of the year, or leave money on the table. Neither is efficient. Cooling that can surge means capacity when it's needed and idle equipment the rest of the time, which cuts both the energy and the peak demand charges that come with it. Cold storage is a large, invisible, always-on electrical load sitting between farms and grocery stores, and it runs on equipment designed for a constant duty it never actually has.
