Shift Thermal

Shift Thermal builds chillers and large heat pumps with thermal storage inside them, so a commercial building makes its cooling when electricity is cheap and clean and delivers it when the building is hot. Owners of large buildings face expensive cooling bills, emissions targets they're accountable for, and heat waves that are getting worse, and the solutions on offer mostly don't pencil.

That is the whole problem with thermal storage: it works, and it has always cost too much to justify, so it stays a curiosity in a handful of showcase buildings. Getting the upfront cost near that of a plain chiller changes it from a green premium into the default purchase. Cooling is a growing share of global electricity demand and it peaks exactly when the grid is dirtiest and most strained. Moving that load a few hours is worth a great deal, and it only happens if the equipment was going to be bought anyway.
