Nvirovate makes pressure-sensitive adhesive from soy: the sticky layer on labels, tapes, and packaging, 96% bio-derived, compostable, cured with UV light instead of heat, and it runs on the coating equipment manufacturers already own at a price matching what they pay now. The global market for these adhesives runs to tens of billions of kilograms a year, and essentially all of it is petroleum acrylic suspended in water or solvent.

That carrier has to be evaporated off, which takes enormous heat, and the volatile compounds released then have to be incinerated, which takes more. The emissions from that drying step are the hidden cost of an adhesive nobody thinks about. Curing with light skips the whole sequence, and the label composts with the package instead of contaminating it. Eleven years of university chemistry went into a material whose entire job is to be unnoticed.
