Beyond Silicon

Beyond Silicon develops perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells that pair perovskite, a light-absorbing material, with conventional silicon so panels can capture more sunlight and generate more electricity from the same area. That matters because solar must expand rapidly to replace fossil-fuel power, while many rooftops and project sites have limited space and every panel brings installation and equipment costs. Yet standard silicon cells are approaching their practical efficiency limits, and promising alternatives have struggled to make the leap from laboratory performance to products that can be manufactured at scale and trusted for decades outdoors.

Beyond Silicon’s key idea is to give solar manufacturers a higher-output cell that can fit into existing module production with minimal disruption. This approach builds on the industry’s enormous silicon base instead of asking manufacturers to start over, offering a practical path to better panels and more competitive domestic production. The timing is strong: electricity demand is climbing, solar deployment must accelerate, and manufacturers need products that deliver more clean power from each factory line and installation.
