Leap Photovoltaics makes silicon solar cells without wafers. Instead of sawing a crystal ingot into wafers and losing much of it as dust, Leap builds cells from a single layer of monocrystalline silicon particles, going from refined silicon straight to a finished cell through an additive process. Same performance, same reliability, roughly half the cost.

Solar cell manufacturing has consolidated overseas around wafer production that is enormously capital intensive, and every attempt to localize it runs into the same wall: buyers won't pay a premium for a domestic cell and won't accept lower performance. Removing the wafer removes the reason the supply chain looks the way it does. A cell plant becomes something you can build near the module plant, at a fraction of the capital, on a timeline that matches how fast solar actually needs to grow.
