Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

As a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) transforms the world through courageous discovery and innovation. With a business volume of nearly $1 billion annually, we conduct research and development for government, industry, and universities.

Our clean technology expertise includes electricity grid efficiency and reliability, energy conversion and storage, fuel cells, biofuels, bio-based chemicals, and software. Examples include bio-based propylene glycol now produced by ADM, battery technology licensed to two companies for grid-scale storage, and smart-grid technologies and software being demonstrated in five states.

We work with businesses, including some Element 8 portfolio companies, to commercialize our technologies through existing companies or new business ventures. We have more than 250 active licenses nationwide and more than 1,200 U.S. patents. More than 160 companies got started with technology or staff from PNNL, and our free technology assistance has helped more than 1,000 companies.
